About Riverfield
Riverfield Elementary School is located in Fairfield, Connecticut, a desirable community in Fairfield County. Our town has a population of more than 59,000 people with a high-income demographic and a low crime rate. Fairfield features five miles of coastline on Long Island Sound, five town beaches, two marinas, great schools, a variety of recreational programs, three commuter train stations for easy access to the New York Metropolitan region, and much more.
Our school is fully renovated with approximately 374 students in grades K-5 and 74 staff members to support their needs. The Riverfield P.T.A. is also an active body and contributes greatly to our success. They provide talent and resources, as well as enrichment activities and financial support. We are a successful school community because of the collaboration between our families and staff members.
The rich program in our Library Media Center at Riverfield supports 21st-century skills and extensive technology instruction. A new addition to the library is our makerspace, which is a space providing students opportunities to create, think, share, and grow using an assortment of materials and technologies. Coupled with our S.T.E.A.M. program, which is an approach to learning that uses Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics as access points for guiding student inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking, our students have a variety of ways to broaden their intellectual skills and creativity.
The effective collaboration between the classroom staff and the Library Media Center provides our students with the skills needed to reach high academic levels. Riverfield students consistently perform at a high level in state assessments. Over 80% of our students consistently meet or exceed the standards on the Smarter Balance Assessment.
We promote the physical fitness of our school community by offering a running club for students. On a designated morning before school, you will find hundreds of students outside walking or running for fitness along with our P.T.A. volunteers. Over 90% of our students consistently meet or exceed the accountability standards for physical fitness. This is a direct result of Riverfield families teaching their children about the importance of physical fitness and the Fairfield School District’s rigorous physical education program.
Celebrations are an important part of the Riverfield community, where we come together throughout the school year for holiday fun, patriotic events, musical concerts, and student assemblies. Our Student Council program also offers students in grades 3 – 5 the opportunity to organize and carry out a variety of school activities and events that contribute to school spirit and community welfare while also developing leadership skills. The student council is the voice of the student body and the members help share student ideas, interests, and concerns with the school-wide community.
In addition to emphasizing high academic achievement, physical fitness, school celebrations, and community service, we work diligently to create good citizens. We begin each day reciting our student-created school pledge, which is based on our school acronym, RFLD. “We pledge each day to be Responsible and Respectful, Friendly and Fair, Leaders and Learners, Determined and Dedicated, and to do our best and have fun learning.” We strive to make our classrooms rigorous academic communities that are caring, empathetic, and collaborative, which promotes a positive classroom culture and a strong sense of community among students.
